The argument began so quietly that Ava almost missed it.

She was sitting cross-legged on her bedroom floor, surrounded by textbooks she had promised herself she would study, though the afternoon sunlight pouring through the window had made concentration impossible. Beyond the glass, the late summer day was slowly surrendering to evening. The paddocks behind the house glowed gold beneath the lowering sun, and the jacaranda tree near the fence line stirred lazily in the breeze, scattering blossoms that drifted through the air like scraps of purple paper.

The house itself felt unusually still. Not peaceful – still. There was a difference.

For years she had considered this place immune to the kinds of disasters that happened to other families. The kitchen always smelled of coffee and garlic and whatever Ben happened to be experimenting with for dinner. The laundry basket always overflowed on Wednesdays. The dog always slept beneath the dining table after dark. There was comfort in those certainties, in the predictable rhythm of ordinary life.

Perhaps that was why the sound of her mother's voice slipping through the floorboards below caught her attention so quickly.

At first Ava could not make out the words. Only the tone. A heaviness sat beneath it, something weary and fragile that made her put down her pen and listen despite herself. She rose from the floor and moved toward her bedroom door, opening it just enough to hear more clearly.

"...not saying I don't love you."

Her mother's voice.

A pause followed. Long enough to make Ava's stomach tighten. Then Ben answered.

"No. You're saying something worse."

The words settled over the house like storm clouds.

Ava stood motionless.

She should have gone back to her room. She knew that. Adults deserved privacy and children were not supposed to eavesdrop on conversations that did not concern them. Yet some instinct stronger than good manners rooted her to the spot.

Below her, chairs shifted. A cupboard door opened and closed.

Then her mother sighed.

"I just don't know what happened to us."

There was no anger in the question. No accusation. Only sadness.

And somehow sadness was infinitely more frightening.

Because anger passed.

Sadness stayed.

Ava slowly sank onto the top stair, her pulse suddenly loud in her ears.

She knew enough about relationships to understand what her mother meant. Over the past year she had watched subtle changes unfold between them. Ben no longer slipped his arms around her mother while she cooked. They rarely sat together on the lounge anymore. Their conversations revolved around groceries, bills, appointments and obligations, as though somewhere along the way they had become business partners managing a household rather than two people who had once fallen deeply in love.

But more than that. She knew men had needs. Physical needs. She knew her mother refused Ben those needs, but Ava did not know why. She knew that her mother had told her that it can be used to control men, to get what you want, but it just seemed to make Ben frustrated. He would become snappy and irritable. Ava did not understand why her mother could say she loved Ben but wouldn’t let him feel good.

She remembered when that had not been true.

She remembered movie nights beneath blankets spread across the lounge room floor. She remembered dancing in the kitchen while dinner burned. She remembered seeing them kiss when they thought nobody was watching and immediately pretending she had seen nothing.

Back then the house had seemed brighter somehow.

Now she realised she could not remember the last time she had witnessed any of those things. Those memories were replaced by Ben storming out of the bedroom looking upset. Or Ava walking in on him when he took too long in the shower to find him holding his manhood, only for him to yell at her to get out.

"What do you want me to do?" Ben asked quietly.

The exhaustion in his voice startled her.

For a moment she pictured him not as her stepfather but as a man standing alone in the kitchen after everyone else had gone to bed, carrying worries she knew nothing about. Cared nothing about.

"I don't know, " her mother admitted.

Another silence followed.

Then came the words Ava would think about for days afterward.

"Sometimes I wonder if we're just staying because it's easier."

The world seemed to tilt beneath her. Not because anyone had spoken the word divorce, but because they had not needed to. Some possibilities are terrifying precisely because nobody says them aloud.

Ava retreated upstairs before she heard anything more.

Inside her bedroom she sat on the edge of her bed and stared through the window as darkness slowly gathered over the paddocks. The horizon burned orange for a few final moments before fading into blue, and one by one lights appeared in neighbouring houses.

For the first time in years, uncertainty crept into her own future. Because if Ben left, he would not merely take himself with him. He would take Sunday breakfasts. He would take family camping trips. He would take every tradition that existed because he had created it. The thought frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

Her mother would be heartbroken. And Ben would be lonely.

Ava dwelled on the thought.

Then a plan.

Ava intended to remind him.

— -----

The opportunity arrived on a rainy Saturday afternoon nearly three weeks later.

Her mother had driven into town to run errands and would be gone for several hours. The rain had settled over the countryside since dawn, transforming the world into shades of silver and green. Water drummed steadily against the roof while mist hung low across the paddocks beyond the house, softening fences and trees until they seemed painted rather than real.

Ben sat alone in the living room. A book rested open in his lap.

He appeared to be reading, but Ava knew with her mother gone that he would soon retreat to the bedroom, or even a shower.

Ava stood in the doorway watching him, she noticed he had not turned a page for several minutes and the first step of her plan was alive.

The sight filled her with unexpected sadness.

For most of her childhood, Ben had always seemed larger than problems. The person who fixed things. The person who remained calm during emergencies. The person who knew what to do.

Now he simply looked tired. Older.

Not physically, but in a way that suggested disappointment could age a person faster than years ever could.

"What are you doing there?" he asked when he noticed her.

He took a moment to appreciate his stepdaughter. Her flawless skin. Her chocolate brown hair cascading over delicate shoulders. Slim and slender but quite short. Except her thighs, the only part of her with visible muscle.

She walked forward before courage could abandon her. But it was too late.

"Uh. Nothing. Never mind. I’m going to have a shower."

His eyebrows lifted. A nervous laugh escaped her.

"Oh, I was going to do that but it’s okay, you have one. I’ll be in my room reading."

He set his book aside, earmarked at the same page he picked it up with, and walked with some enthusiasm to his bedroom.

Ava followed him and paused at the bathroom door, watching him continue down the hall and close the door behind him. She waited a minute and then crept up to the door to listen.

After a further minute, she heard the distinct sound of a belt being unbuckled and jeans being unzipped. Now was her time.

Ava entered the room quietly, leaning the back of her arm against the door to crack it open. She saw Ben laid back on the corner of the bed, eyes closed. He was slowly stroking his hand up and down and, although he was already hard, the tip continued to swell as he stroked. She watched.

Then, Ava sat opposite him and folded her hands tightly together. Ben immediately noticed and shot up, grasping at his loose jeans and tugging them up unsuccessfully. Realising, he hunched forward to cover himself as best he could, and cleared this throat.

“Ava, honey, I thought you were showering.”

“I was just thinking of things.”

Ben looked around and grabbed a nearby pillow for his lap, then relaxed into the conversation. “About what my love?”

“You. And mum.”

“Oh, yeah, that’s. Um.”

“Don’t worry, you don’t have to explain it.”

“I still love your mother, if that’s what you’re worried about.”

“No. I understand what she doesn’t give you. I know... I know what men need.”

Ben paused, he blushed. This was not the first time thoughts had flooded his mind. He shifted the pillow and tried to say “No.”

"Show me." he encouraged, his voice barely a whisper now.

Ava leaned closer, the faint scent of the perfume Ben bought her for her last birthday. Her eyes met Ben's, holding them, searching, filled with an unspoken plea.

“Ben, ” she whispered, her voice shaking. “Would you – stay? A little longer?”

He hesitated, reading more in her request than the words alone. There was a vulnerability in her gaze, an invitation wrapped in shyness.

Ava moved first, decisive and bold, closing the space between them. Her fingers trailed along his jawline, a touch so gentle it was electrifying. Ben caught his breath, his resistance melting against the warmth of her skin.

With a shared, silent understanding, Ava pushed him gently back onto the bed while moving the pillow aside. It was as though the world outside the room disappeared.

Kneeling before him, Ava’s confidence unfurled, her eyes holding his with unwavering intent. She marked this as her moment – a sweet first, tender and tentative. Ben's gaze softened, sensing the dual nature of her bravery and innocence.

Her hands moved expertly to whisper along his thighs, a teasing promise of what was to come. She shifted closer, never breaking eye contact, her expression one of pure devotion. Ben's heart pounded, anticipation shivering through his veins.

“Let me, ” Ava murmured, her voice a sensual pledge. Her lips quickly found his skin, velvety and warm, as her mouth claimed his head with aching tenderness. Their worlds blurred into a swirl of sensation. Ava felt her stepdad throb and grow between her lips, and a determination grew inside of her.

Ava’s rhythm was unhurried, each movement an exploration, an act of reverence. Ben struggled to maintain composure, his moans tumbling freely as she brought him to the precipice with deft dances of her tongue. She danced the tip of her tongue over the ridges and valleys, then quickly darted down to his impressive shaft, following veins like a roadmap.

Her delicate fingers played upon him like an instrument, each note drawing him further in. The room filled with the sounds of their shared dance – a melody of suppressed sighs and unrestrained breathing. Ava’s insistence was soft but firm, leading him ever closer to the edge of pleasure. She felt him swell in her mouth and wrapped her lips, bobbing up and down while gripping him firmly at the base.

His excitement tasted sweet to her. Like the lick of a lollipop. She grew curious and took him further in but quickly gagged. This would take practise and was beyond her current ability. She didn’t want it to distract or discourage Ben, so he took the tip in her mouth and created a suction. At the same time, her tongue painted strokes on the underside of his head and Ben threw his head back, the breath he was about to exhale catching in his throat.

When he finally got his breath back, after Ava slowed her licks and released her vacuum, Ben looked down with absolute adoration.

“I love you Ava.”

You couldn’t tell, but she was smiling. Her skilled fingers traced his testicles and her eyes twinkled. She wanted to taste all of him. She wanted him to release everything. His frustration, his abandonment, his lack of affection. Let it build. Let the anger surge up the pulsing shaft Ava’s fingers were wrapped around. Let it explode out the tip aimed directly down her throat. She needed it as much as he did.

Ava would never tell Ben, but her own sexual arousal was trickling down her thigh. She had not been wearing underwear. It was a secret hope that she would not bring him to climax with her mouth, and he would demand her body. She would resist, protest, but ultimately, she wanted him to take it. But of course, if he did, he would have to promise to let her feel the real him. Skin on skin. Exploding inside her. Risks be damned. But that would not be necessary, he was on the verge.

A last, breathless moment extended into eternity before he found release, his hands tangling in her hair as she took him wholly, willing and eager. Ava’s devotion was complete, her lips curving into a triumphant smile as she swallowed everything he offered, her eyes alight with satisfaction. She was disappointed it didn’t have a stronger taste, but she was pleased with the amount. She felt him throb five or six times and each was accompanied by a warm splash at the back of her throat.

They lingered in the afterglow, heat still radiating between them. Ben gazed at her with newfound admiration, intoxicated by the blend of sweetness and raw desire she embodied.

“Was that enough to make you stay?” Ava asked softly, a playful grin touching her lips as she settled beside him.

Ben chuckled, pulling her closer. “Enough for today, ” he murmured. “But I think we’ll have to do this again.”

“You spent three weekends building my cubby house. You sat through six hours of dance recitals. You came to every parent-teacher interview. You never forgot my birthday.”

For several moments he simply sat there. Looking down. Thinking. Ava was the first to speak again.

“You made this place feel like home. I want to swallow every bit of desire you have. If Mum turns you down and storms out the house, you come to my room and I’ll be waiting, mouth open. Release all of that frustration down my throat, not at Mum. Even if you need to wake me. Any time, I mean it.”

"You’d do that for me?"

She nodded.

"Why?"

The question was soft.

Almost bewildered.

And suddenly every speech she had rehearsed vanished.

All that remained was honesty.

"Because I thought maybe you'd forgotten."

His brow furrowed.

"Forgotten what?"

"How important you are."

The words hung between them.

"I know things aren't good right now, " she continued. "I know that's not my business. And I know you and Mum have other problems that I probably don't understand."

She hesitated.

"But this is something I can give you. Every time I hear people talking about relationships, they talk about romance and dates and all the things they've lost."

Her voice trembled.

"And maybe those things matter. But tonight you gained something."

For a moment he simply stared at her.

Ava pressed on.

"You matter here."

The words came faster now.

"You matter to me. You matter to Mum. You matter to this family."

She gestured toward the walls around them.

"This house exists because of you. Half the memories in that book exist because of you."

Her throat tightened.

"If you left, a piece of me would be gone. I’d give anything to keep that. I know when you have exploded, you are happy.”

For several seconds neither moved. Then Ben wrapped his arms around her.

Ava had been hugged by him thousands of times before. After scraped knees. School awards. Birthdays. Bad days.

But this felt different.

This felt like gratitude.

Like hope.
