Martin's Career - 09

The holiday week had ended in a blur of late nights and early mornings, but the framed squares on Martin’s office wall had grown by two more. Elena’s black lace now sat beside the first one from the train, and a pale peach square from a woman he’d met at a New Year’s party hung near the center. Martin packed his carry-on with the same quiet ritual he always followed: passport, laptop, and a fresh silk square folded into his jacket pocket. He chose the emerald one this time, Evelyn’s gift from the fitting room. It felt right for the first flight of the year.

He arrived at the airport earlier than usual, the terminal still half-asleep under the early-morning lights. His boarding pass showed a different airline, a different gate, a different route. The plane was a narrow-body with two-by-two seating, and Martin settled into 12A with his jacket draped over his lap. The cabin smelled of fresh coffee and the faint citrus of the cleaning solution they used between flights. He opened his laptop and pretended to work while passengers filed past.

A soft voice pulled him out of his thoughts.

“Excuse me, sir. Are you Martin?”

He looked up to find a flight attendant standing in the aisle. She wore the standard navy uniform, but the fit was different—tailored at the waist, the skirt cut just above the knee. Her name tag read “Isabella.” Dark hair was pinned into a neat twist, and her eyes were the color of warm espresso. She held a small tray with water and a warm towel, but she wasn’t moving on to the next row.

Martin nodded. “That’s me.”

Isabella’s smile was slow and knowing. “I thought so. Lila talks about you constantly. She said if I ever saw a man with your de***********ion—tall, quiet, always wearing a silk square in his jacket pocket—I should introduce myself.”

She set the tray on his tray table and leaned a little closer, the scent of her perfume drifting between them. “She also said you keep souvenirs.”

Martin felt the corner of his mouth lift. “Lila has a habit of telling stories.”

“Only the good ones,” Isabella replied. She straightened, but her gaze lingered on the emerald square visible at his pocket. “She told me about the night you two spent in the crew hotel after that storm delay. Said you kept her panties and wore them as a pocket square the next day.”

Martin’s pulse quickened, but he kept his voice even. “She gave them to me.”

Isabella’s eyes sparkled. “She said you’d say that.” She glanced toward the galley, then back at him. “I have a twenty-minute break once we reach cruising altitude. If you’re interested, I can bring you something a little stronger than water.”

She moved on before he could answer, hips swaying just enough to draw his attention. Martin watched her disappear behind the curtain, the scent of her perfume still hanging in the air. He adjusted the emerald square, fingers brushing the silk, and wondered what Lila had really told her.

The seatbelt sign clicked off twenty minutes later. Isabella returned with a small glass of champagne and a folded linen napkin. She set both on his table, then leaned down so her mouth was close to his ear.

“Meet me in the last row once the lights dim,” she whispered. “It’s empty. I’ll leave the curtain open a little so you can see me.”

She straightened and continued down the aisle, checking on other passengers as if nothing had happened. Martin sipped the champagne and waited. The cabin lights lowered gradually, turning the narrow space into a series of soft shadows. When the plane settled into the steady drone of cruising altitude, he unbuckled and moved toward the rear.

Isabella was already there, standing in the small space between the last row and the lavatory. She had removed her blazer, leaving only the fitted white blouse and navy skirt. The top two buttons were undone, showing the edge of a pale blue bra. She smiled when she saw him and reached for his hand, pulling him into the row.

“Sit,” she said quietly. “I told the other attendant I needed to rest my feet.”

Martin took the aisle seat. Isabella sat beside him, close enough that their thighs touched. She crossed her legs, the movement deliberate, and the hem of her skirt rode higher. Martin caught a glimpse of matching blue panties beneath the navy fabric.

“Lila said you like to be teased,” Isabella murmured. “She said you like it slow.”

Her hand rested on his thigh, fingers tracing small circles through his trousers. Martin’s breath caught, but he stayed still, letting her set the pace. Isabella leaned in and kissed the corner of his jaw, then lower, her lips brushing the side of his neck. Her free hand found the emerald square and tugged it free, unfolding it across her palm.

“She said this one is from Evelyn,” she whispered. “The woman who helped you buy the suit.”

Martin nodded. Isabella folded the square again and tucked it into her own blouse pocket, the silk disappearing against the white cotton.

“I’ll give it back later,” she promised. “After I add something of my own.”

She shifted in the seat, swinging one leg over his lap so she straddled him. The movement was smooth, practiced, as if she had done this before in the quiet back rows of other flights. Her skirt bunched at her hips, and Martin’s hands settled on her waist, feeling the warmth of her skin through the thin blouse. Isabella rocked forward slowly, pressing against the growing hardness beneath his trousers.

“Tell me what Lila likes,” she said, voice low. “I want to do it better.”

Martin’s hands slid up her back, fingers finding the clasp of her bra through the fabric. “She likes to be in control,” he answered. “She likes to make me wait.”

Isabella smiled against his mouth. “Then I’ll make you wait longer.”

She reached between them and unbuckled his belt, the metal click soft in the dim cabin. Her hand slipped inside his trousers, fingers wrapping around him with deliberate slowness. Martin’s head fell back against the seat as she stroked him, thumb circling the head on each upward pass. Isabella watched his face, cataloging every reaction.

When his breathing grew ragged, she stopped. She lifted her hand and licked her thumb clean, eyes never leaving his. Then she stood, smoothing her skirt back into place.

“Stay here,” she said. “I’ll be right back.”

She disappeared through the curtain for less than a minute, returning with a small white envelope. She pressed it into his hand.

“Open it when you land,” she instructed. “And keep the square. I want you to remember this flight.”

Martin slipped the envelope into his jacket. Isabella leaned down and kissed him once more, slower this time, her tongue tracing his lower lip before she pulled away.

“Next time you fly this route, ask for me,” she said. “I’ll make sure the back row stays empty.”

She returned to the galley, leaving Martin alone with the steady hum of the engines and the faint scent of her perfume on his skin. He stayed in the seat until the seatbelt sign came on again, then moved back to 12A as the plane began its descent.

At the gate, passengers filed out quickly. Martin lingered, waiting until the cabin was nearly empty before standing. Isabella stood near the cockpit door, handing out final goodbyes. When he reached her, she slipped something small into his palm—a folded square of pale blue silk, still warm from her body.

“For the wall,” she whispered. “Lila will want to hear all about it.”

Martin walked through the terminal with the new square in his pocket and the envelope still unopened. He found a quiet corner near baggage claim and tore it open. Inside was a small note in neat handwriting:

Call me when you’re back in the city. I want to see the mural.

Beneath the note was a phone number and a single initial: I.

Martin folded the note and tucked it away. The holiday was over, but the collection was growing again. He stepped out into the cool morning air, already thinking about the next flight, the next woman, the next square that would find its place on the wall.

Back home, he pinned Isabella’s pale blue square beside Elena’s black lace. The brass label caught the light as he stepped back to study the arrangement. Each frame told a story, each story a promise of more to come. Martin poured himself a glass of wine and sat at the desk, phone in hand, scrolling through old messages until he found Lila’s number.

He typed a single line:

Isabella says hello.

The reply came within minutes, a photo of Lila in her uniform, smiling at the camera with one hand resting on her hip. Beneath it, a short message:

She always did like my stories. Your turn next.

Martin set the phone down and looked at the wall again. The squares seemed to glow in the afternoon light, each one a reminder that the game was still going, the collection still growing, the next encounter already waiting somewhere in the sky.
