You want to do some good, you say to yourself. You genuinely want to help the less well off and after a brief middle age crisis, you find yourself in a UN uniform, giving out food, water and aid to deprived black families in Congo, savaged by civil war, and all of them looking to you for protection and help. Underprivilege though is another man's privilege, and this reliance on you and your good nature in time made you powerful, and power corrupts. it didnt take long to see those exploiting the situation. Stories of torture, rape and looting covered 3000 square miles, not just by Rwandan militias but by UN soldiers too. But the mothers in particular had no choice. They would walk for days to collect packages to ensure their kids were looked after back in the villages, and rape/sexual favours went with the territory.
And there was something unusual about most of these villages. There were few males. The husbands had either been murdered or joined the militias, whilst the sons, as young as 8, were mostly taken to be trained to be militias. It left dozens of poor villages, with nothing but mothers under 30 and their daughters.
I became a saviour to all 85 women and girls in a place called Paradis, 300 miles from the Ugandan border. For 7 weeks now I had been delivering packages, medicine, water, food and anything else which would help, every Tuesday, without fail. The kids would run out at my jeep, shouting in joy, while the mothers smiled on. There were only 5 elderly men living in the 13 huts or so, and they kept themselves to themselves. One was pretty sick. Maybe only 5 or 6 boys were spared too. This left the mothers and daughters to make the decisions, pool the village well, and make communal meals. Now and then a few other UN reps would show up to help, but it was mostly me. After a few weeks, I noticed Indian, Chinese and even white girls also in the village, and was later told that they were the children of foreign UN soldiers, who had raped Congo women and fled.
On my second Tuesday, I met one of these extraordinary mothers, Tabu, 26, a dark black tribes woman, who had a broad white smile, large breasts and slender figure. I remember the first thing I noticed about her was her humour and beautifully soft skin.
