Chapter Two - Life is Full of Surprises. Emily takes another step towards a new life.

The sunlight light hits her closed eyes like a blade, and Emily knows before she opens them that she is alone.

Not the alone of an empty apartment, the familiar hollow of her own space. This is different. The bed is too big. The sheets are too cold on the side where a body should be. The air smells like sex and sandalwood.

She opens her eyes.

The mirrored ceiling greets her first. She’s staring up at herself - naked, spread-eagle, the white sheets kicked down around her ankles in a tangled wreck. Her hair is a disaster, matted on one side, sticking up on the other, plastered to her forehead with dried sweat. Her skin is flushed pink from her collarbones to her thighs, and there are marks - bruises, faint and dark, blooming along the insides of her arms where fingers gripped too hard.

A dumb smile pulls at her mouth. She lies there, arms and legs splayed, and stares at the wreckage of herself in the mirror and thinks: holy shit.

Her lips are swollen. She can feel them before she sees them - puffy, tender, the lower one slightly split at the corner. They’re pinker than usual, almost raw-looking, and when she runs her tongue along the inside of her lower lip, she tastes salt and something muskier, something that isn’t hers. Nyla. She can still taste Nyla. The flavor is embedded in the tissue of her mouth, in the creases of her lips, and it sends a low pulse of heat through her belly that makes her thighs press together involuntarily.

Her nose throbs. She touches the bridge with two fingers, and the pain is immediate - a dull, deep ache that radiates outward through her sinuses. She remembers why. The weight of Nyla’s body driving down, the soft flesh of her asshole pressing, pushing against Emily’s nostrils, the cartilage bending under pressure while Emily’s tongue worked frantically between Nyla’s thighs.

She remembers Nyla’s hands reaching back, her own hands gripping her own ankles that were locked, crossed behind Emily’s head, pulling her own body down harder, locked against Emily’s face. The leverage. The deliberate, calculated force of it. Nyla grinding her cunt into Emily’s mouth while her free hand worked furiously between Emily’s legs. Emily had been pinned -completely, utterly pinned - trapped.

When Emily wakes up, Nyla is gone. Emily can’t really believe what happened last night. She lays there, spread eagle on the bed, sheets and blankets asked, a dumb smile on her face as she stares at herself - the aftermath - in the mirror on the ceiling.

Her lips are pink, puffy, her nose sore from having Nyla’s cunt locked to her face. She remembers Nyla had reached back and grabbed her own feet at one point, forcing her pussy into Emily’s helpless mouth, jackhammering her hand in between Emily’s legs as she suffocated on pussy. Looking in the mirror, Emily sees the stains of their bodily fluids all over the bed. Her pussy is sore, but oh it was so worth it.

“Holy shit.” Emily says, “What a night.” Looking in the mirror above her, she realizes there is a note laying next to her. Emily looks over, there it is. She picks it up and reads it.

The paper is cream-colored, thick, the kind of stationery that costs more than Emily’s phone bill. It’s folded once, creased neatly, and it sits on the pillow beside her like it’s been placed there with the same precision Nyla applied to everything else.

Emily reaches for it. Her arm aches - the muscles in her shoulder protesting, the bruise along her inner bicep darkening to a deep purple-blue where fingers gripped and held. She unfolds the note.

Emily -

Thank you for an incredible night. I had to leave for work - duty calls, unfortunately. My number is 555-1212. If you decide you’d like to see me again, I have something I think you’ll enjoy. A surprise. Call me.

I left sweatpants and a shirt for you on the chair. I’m afraid your dress didn’t survive - my apologies.

XO - Nyla

Emily reads it twice, remembering.

Last night. Last night. The Uber, the rain, Nyla’s hand sliding up her thigh through the soaked fabric of her dress. The foyer, the hallway, the mirrored ceiling. Nyla’s mouth between her legs, the way her tongue found that rhythm that made Emily’s vision go white. The suffocation - Christ, the suffocation - Nyla’s weight driving down, her asshole sealing against Emily’s nostrils, the lack of air making everything brighter, sharper, more devastating. The orgasm that ripped through her like something tectonic, something that rearranged the geography of her nervous system.

She’d let a stranger nearly suffocate her. She’d liked it. She’d gripped those thighs and pulled her closer and come harder than she’d ever come in her life while her lungs screamed for oxygen. She lies there for a few moments, just mapping out the bruises on her arms and legs where Nylas fingers dug into her body the night before.

She has to pee.

Emily sits up. The motion sends a cascade of aches through her body -her shoulders, the muscles there stiff and sore from being pinned beneath Nyla’s weight, and her inner thighs, which feel like she ran a marathon. She swings her legs over the edge of the bed, and her bare feet touch the hardwood floor, cool and smooth against her soles.

The sweatpants and shirt are right where the note said they’d be. Folded on the chair beside the nightstand, arranged with the same geometric precision as the note itself. Gray sweatpants, soft and oversized, and a white t-shirt that smells faintly of sandalwood when Emily lifts it to her face. Nyla’s scent.

Emily picks up the clothes, and pads out of the bedroom barefoot, and the apartment opens around her like a museum she’s wandered into after hours.

Last night, everything had been a blur - the hallway dark, Nyla’s mouth on hers, hands pulling her backward through shadows toward the bedroom. She hadn’t seen any of this. Now, in the morning light that pours through floor-to-ceiling windows she doesn’t remember passing, she sees it all.

The apartment is stunning. That’s the only word for it. Warm wood everywhere - dark walnut floors, a dining table that looks like it was carved from a single slab, bookshelves built into the walls with no visible seams. Bronze accents catch the light: drawer pulls, light fixtures, the frame of a full-length mirror at the end of the hallway. There are lots of mirrors, and Emily catches glimpes of her naked, bruised body in every direction she looks.

And then she sees the photographs.

They’re everywhere. The walls are covered with them - framed prints in black and white, hung at eye level in what she realizes is not a random arrangement but a deliberate gallery, a progression. Emily stops walking.

The first one she really sees is in the hallway - a blonde, shot from the breasts up, her face filling the frame with an expression that makes Emily’s stomach drop. The woman’s nipples are pierced with thick horizontal bars, the metal catching the light, and her lower lip is a constellation of rings - Emily counts them, her eyes tracking the silver loops one by one, and there are seven, seven metal rings punched through the plush flesh of her lower lip, arranged in a crescent that follows the curve of her mouth. A large septum ring hangs from her nose, heavy and ornate, and her eyes are half-lidded, her mouth slack, her jaw hanging open in a look of such raw, unfiltered ecstasy that Emily can feel her own breath catch.

She’s cumming. The woman in the photograph is cumming. Emily can see it in the flush spreading across her chest, the way her neck is arched, the tendons standing out like cables beneath the skin, the pupils blown so wide the irises are nearly invisible. It’s the same face Emily saw in the mirrored ceiling last night - her own face, contorted and unrecognizable in the grip of something that obliterated language.

Emily’s hand rises unconsciously to her own lips, fingers tracing the swollen, tender flesh, and she thinks about what those metal rings would feel like against her tongue, against her clit, and a shiver runs the full length of her spine.

She moves to the next photograph.

This one is just a mouth. Voluptuous lips, full and dark, stretched wide open around a tongue that glistens under the studio lights. The teeth are white, perfectly aligned, framing the tongue like a jewel in a setting - and the tongue itself is pierced. Two rows of metal studs run along its surface, tiny silver beads embedded in the pink flesh, catching light with each subtle shift of the muscle. Emily stares at the image and her body responds before her mind can intervene: a pulse of heat between her legs, her thighs pressing together, the borrowed sweatpants suddenly too thin, too close against her swollen, sensitive flesh.

She imagines that tongue on her. The metal studs dragging across her clit, each tiny bead catching against the hood, the ridges of her inner lips, the wet, tender entrance of her cunt. She imagines it circling the way Nyla’s tongue circled last night - slow, deliberate, building pressure in increments - and the studs adding texture, adding friction, turning every stroke into something more complex, more devastating. She imagines that pierced tongue sliding inside her, the studs pressing against the walls of her cunt, and her knees actually weaken, a tremor running through her thighs that forces her to brace one hand against the wall.

The wall is warm under her palm. She can feel the grain of the wood, the slight vibration of the building’s systems humming behind the drywall, and the sensation grounds her just enough to keep her upright.

She looks at the next photograph. And the next. And the one after that.

It takes her three images to realize what she’s seeing. The first one - the blonde with the septum ring and the seven lip piercings - she’s there again in the next frame, but now there’s a tattoo visible on her collarbone, a delicate filigree of black ink that wasn’t there before. And in the third photograph, the same woman - Emily is sure of it now, the same jawline, the same slope of the nose, the same particular fullness of the lower lip - has added a vertical labret piercing beneath her lower lip, a small silver barbell that glints between the rings. And a new tattoo, this one curling around her left bicep, a vine of some kind, dark and intricate.

A progression. Emily moves down the hallway, and each photograph adds something: another piercing through an eyebrow, a row of small studs along the cartilage of an ear, a navel ring with a dangling chain that catches the light, a tattoo that spreads from the small of the back across the curve of a hip. The same woman, transforming. Each image a step further along a path that Emily can’t see the end of, and the woman’s expression in every photograph is the same - that slack-jawed, glassy-eyed ecstasy, the look of someone who has been taken apart and put back together differently.

Emily’s bladder reminds her of its existence with a sharp, urgent pressure, and she tears her eyes away from the photographs and keeps moving down the hallway, past more images - a close-up of a pierced nipple, the bar threaded through flesh that looks swollen and tender, a droplet of something glistening at the edge of the wound; a full-body shot of the woman on her knees, her back arched, her pierced tongue extended toward the camera, her hands bound behind her with what looks like silk rope.

The bathroom door is at the end of the hall. Emily pushes it open, finds the light switch - a bronze toggle that clicks with satisfying solidity - and the room floods with warm, amber light.

She sits on the toilet, the cool porcelain against her bare thighs, and relief floods through her as she empties her bladder. The sound is loud in the tiled room, and she closes her eyes for a moment, just breathing, just feeling the simple animal satisfaction of release.

When she opens them, the photograph is right in front of her.

It’s large - maybe two feet by three feet - framed in dark wood and mounted at eye level on the wall opposite the toilet. Emily is staring directly at it, and she can’t look away. She is staring directly at the camera. Or at Emily. The distinction blurs.

A woman hanging from an X-shaped bondage rack, her wrists bound above her head with thick leather cuffs, her arms stretched wide, her body forming a taut, suspended Y. She is completely naked. Her breasts are large - unnaturally so, swollen and heavy, the nipples dark and distended - and they are bound at the base with rough hemp rope, the kind that leaves fibers embedded in skin. The binding is tight, viciously so, the rope digging into the flesh beneath each breast, and the tissue above the binding has swollen outward, the breasts jutting forward like they’ve been pressurized, the skin a deep, angry red-purple that darkens to almost black at the rope line.

Emily’s mouth goes dry. She can see the marks on the breasts - long, parallel lines, raised and red, crossing the swollen flesh in neat rows. Caning, she thinks. Someone has caned this woman’s bound breasts, and the welts are fresh, the skin still angry and inflamed.

The woman’s body is a catalog of modification. Her nipples are pierced - thick barbells, horizontal, the same industrial weight-bearing kind as the blonde in the hallway. But there are more: rings through the areolas themselves, three or four around each nipple, the metal sitting in the dark, puffy tissue like satellites orbiting a planet. Her face is pierced - eyebrows, both sides of her nose, her lower lip in a symmetrical pattern. Her ears are heavy with rings, the cartilage so densely pierced that the outer edges look like chainmail. Her navel has a large ring through it, and from the ring hangs a weight - a dark metal disc the size of a silver dollar, pulling the skin downward.

And between her legs -

Emily’s breath stops.

The woman’s cunt is pierced. Extensively. Two parallel rows of thick rings run along the outer labia, maybe six or seven on each side, the metal dark against the swollen, flushed flesh. The rings are large - not the delicate jewelry Emily has seen in magazines or on the discreet websites she’s browsed late at night. These are substantial, the kind that look like they were designed to hold something. And they do. From each ring hangs a weight - cylindrical metal bars, maybe three inches long, pulling the labia downward, stretching the pierced skin taut. The inner labia are pierced too, smaller rings, and the hood of her clit is pierced with a curved barbell that sits directly against the exposed glans.

The woman’s mouth is open. Wide. A soundless moan frozen in the photograph, her lips pulled back from her teeth, her jaw slack. And there, visible on her tongue - the two rows of studs, silver and gleaming. It’s the same woman from the other photos, Emily realizes.

“Whoa.”

The word comes out flat, inadequate, like a child’s response to something that requires an adult vocabulary she doesn’t possess. She is equally fascinated and unsettled - the fascination a hot, pulsing thing in her belly, the unease a cooler thread running alongside it. She thinks about the pain that must have accompanied each piercing, each tattoo, the cane strikes across those bound breasts, the weights pulling at the pierced flesh of that cunt, and tries to reconcile that with the look of obliterating pleasure on the woman’s face. She can’t.

Shaking her head, Emily gets off the toilet and turns to the shower. It is enormous, a glass enclosure with a rainfall head the size of a dinner plate. Emily turns the handle and the water comes on with a deep, pressurized hiss, and she steps under it before it’s fully warm, gasping as the first cold spray hits her bruised skin. She adjusts the temperature, turning it hotter, hotter, until the water is nearly scalding and her skin flushes pink and the heat sinks into her sore muscles like a balm.

She finds the shampoo on a built-in shelf - a clear bottle with no label, the liquid inside pale green and thick. She squeezes some into her palm and the scent hits her immediately: lavender, rich and herbal, with something underneath it - sandalwood, maybe, or cedar. Nyla’s scent. Emily works it into her hair, her fingers massaging her scalp, and the pressure sends sparks of pleasure-pain through the tender skin where Nyla’s hands gripped and pulled last night. The suds run down her body in warm rivulets, tracing the contours of her breasts, her stomach, the curve of her hips, and she watches them slide over the bruises on her inner arms - dark fingerprints pressed into her flesh like a signature.

She rinses, and the water carries the lavender scent down the drain, and she stands under the spray with her eyes closed, her face tilted upward, letting the heat work into her bones.

And then it hits her.

Thursday.

The word arrives in her brain like a slap. Thursday. Today is Thursday. She has work. She has a nine-thirty meeting with the Henderson account, and it’s - she has no idea what time it is.

“Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.”

She shuts off the water and steps out of the shower, dripping onto the bathmat, and her heart is hammering. She grabs a towel from the rack - thick, white, impossibly soft - and wraps it around herself, and then she’s moving, bare feet slapping against the hardwood as she hurries back down the hallway, past the photographs she no longer has time to look at, back into the bedroom.

Her phone. Where is her phone. She’d had it in the Uber, she remembers that, she’d checked it when Sarah texted to cancel - and then Nyla’s hand was on her thigh and the phone disappeared from her awareness entirely.

There. On the nightstand, right next to where she had slept. Emily grabs it, looks at the time - it’s 7:45. She’s going to be late for work, but she’ll be in time for the meeting.

Emily texts her boss to let him know she is running late, then calls an Uber - 3 minutes out - and puts on the sweatpants and T-shirt Nyla left for her. She gathers her things, stuffs her ruined dress into her purse, then runs downstairs. She gets to the door, and remembers again, “shit!” and runs back upstair and grabs Nyla’s note, then back down to the front door. She picks up her heels, runs outside barefoot and jumps in the waiting Uber to her apartment.

On her way home, Emily texts her best friend, Sarah, “Lunch today? You won’t believe the night I had.”

Emily is apologetic when she gets into work, but her boss brushes off her being late - she is always on time and is a star performer on the team. The presentation goes great, the client is thrilled.

She and Sarah meet up at Sarah’s favorite lunch spot, a little sushi joint with a huge sake menu. Emily gets a bento and starts telling Sarah about her wild night. Sarah listens, her mouth agape as Emily recounts the evening, every sordid detail - Sarah is her best friend, and they don’t have secrets.

“She didn’t let you breathe?! That’s horrible!”, Sarah looks stricken.

“No, no, you don’t understand, it wasn’t like that, it was amazing, Sarah.” Emily corrects her. “I’ve never been with anyone like that - it was insane!” Emily is emphatic, leaning forward, eyes wide. She takes a deep breath and leans back, aware of the fact she herself might look a little insane.

“I dunno, sounds dangerous to me, girl.”, Sarah says, clearly not convinced. “Like, you don’t even know this girl, and she’s smothering you?”

“No, she wasn’t actually trying to suffocate me, Sarah - it was just... fun. Anyway, I’ve got her number, I’m going to give her a call later. She’s just what I needed after Marcus.”

Sarah gives Emily a look. The look. Emily hates that look, it is all judgment. Emily braces herself for it. “What about Marcus, Emily? We talked about it and you said you were going to give him another chance.” Sarah sticks out her lower lip, her expression looks like she is talking to about a puppy or a baby, “He’s soooo sweet.”

Emily snorted. “Nice doesn’t make me cum, Sarah - he’s so fucking boring. I... I just can’t, every minute with him the last few weeks make me want to scream, just to get a reaction out of him. Sorry, hard nope.”

Sarah gasps, feigning shock, but smiling “Emily!! Come on, is he really that bad? I know he’s not exactly exciting, but he’s got a great job, he treats you great, and he is totally head over heels for you!”

“Of course he is head over heels for me, I’m amazing.” Emily jokes, smiling back. “And before me, the most exciting thing he’d ever done was stub a toe - he thinks I’m some sort of crazy pixie dream girl because I occasionally wear mis-matched socks. Look - Marcus is nice, but after last night... I just can’t go back to the vanilla on top of vanilla, inside more vanilla. Marcus will find a nice girl, I’m sure, but it’s not going to be me.”

Sarah shrugs and sighs, “Well, I tried.” She leans in, a naughty look on her face as she changes the subject, “So, when are you going to see this woman... Myra, again?”

“Nyla, not Myra” Emily corrects her. “I dunno, but I’m texting her now. Fuck, Sarah, you don’t understand how hot this woman is. She said she had a surprise for me.” Emily gives Sarah an evil grin.

“What kind of surprise?” Sarah asks, poking Emily’s shoulder across the table, taunting her. “Is she going to put a plastic bag over your head? Maybe hold your head underwater for a few minutes?” Sarah smiles to soften the blow of the jibe.

Emily barks a laugh, “I told, you, that was all in good fun. I think she’s, like, really into body art and stuff? She had all these pictures of women - maybe just one woman - with piercings and stuff in her house. Maybe she wants to give me a new hole.” Emily winks and Sarah laughs at the bawdy joke as Emily hits “send”.

Nyla texts back immediately, “Hi. Dinner at 7? Meet me at Gerald’s.” She sends a pin. It’s a fancy spot downtown. “Holy shit.” Emily shows Sarah, and Sarah looks impressed, “Wow, that place is expensive, I’ve heard it’s great.”

Nyla leans in and whispers mockingly to Sarah, “See? Marcus never took me to Gerald’s.”

*** 7PM ***

The Uber drops her at the curb, and Emily stands on the sidewalk in front of Gerald’s and feels her stomach do something gymnastic.

She’d spent every minute between clocking out at five and now on this. The shower at her apartment, the careful exfoliation, the moisturizer applied in concentric circles, the foundation layered and blended, just a touch of blush. She’d done her hair twice - first a sleek blowout that looked too corporate, then a looser, sexier wave that falls past her shoulders in the way she knows makes her neck look longer, exposed. The makeup is dark, deliberate: smoky eyes, a lip color that’s one shade deeper than she’d normally wear, something that makes her mouth look like it’s already been kissed.

The dress is the second-sexiest thing she owns. The little black number is gone, she’d stuffed the ruined scraps into her trash after the Uber ride home this morning, the fabric still stiff with dried sweat and the musk of Nyla’s cunt - and she’d stood in front of her closet for twenty minutes, pulling options and discarding them, before settling on the deep burgundy wrap dress that clings to her ribs and hugs her hips, and shows just enough cleavage to make a statement. Her second-best heels, also burgundy, with a strap that crosses her ankle and open toes. She’d even painted her toenails burgundy, matching her outfit. The perfume - the same one from last night, vanilla and musk, applied at her throat, between her breasts, the inside of each wrist. She’d stood in front of her bathroom mirror and was still dissatisfied, but she had run out of time.

Now she’s here, and the building is exactly what she expected from the outside - understated, expensive, a brass plaque beside a heavy wooden door. The doorman opens it for her, and she steps inside, and the warmth hits her first, then the sound: the low murmur of conversation, the clink of glass, the distant percussion of a piano being played somewhere she can’t see.

The hostess is tall, willowy, dressed in black, and she looks at Emily with practiced politeness. Emily gives Nyla’s name, and the hostess nods - a single, precise movement - and leads her through the dining room.

Emily’s heels click against the hardwood, and she’s aware of the sound, aware of the way the burgundy fabric shifts against her thighs with each step, aware of the eyes that track her movement across the room. She doesn’t look at them. She’s looking for Nyla.

And then she finds her.

Nyla is seated at a corner table, half-turned toward the room, one arm resting on the back of her chair with the casual authority of someone who has never once wondered whether she belongs somewhere. She’s wearing something simple - a simple sundress, legs bare, sandals - and the simplicity of it makes Emily feel simultaneously overdressed and under-prepared. Nyla’s copper-bronze hair is pulled back, exposing the sharp line of her jaw, the elegant architecture of her neck. Her skin glows in the low amber light like something lit from within, and when she turns and sees Emily, those dark eyes - flecked with red and orange, God, those eyes - find hers and hold them.

Emily’s knees go weak. Actually weak. She feels the muscles in her thighs loosen, a trembling instability that makes her grateful the hostess has pulled out the chair as as Emily nearly collapses into it. The leather is warm and firm beneath her, and she arranges herself - crosses her legs, uncrosses them, smooths the burgundy fabric over her thighs - and she can feel Nyla watching her do all of it with that same composed, interested expression.

Say something. Say something normal. Say something that doesn’t make you sound like a teenager.

“Hi, ” Emily says. Her voice comes out higher than she intended, slightly breathless, and she clears her throat. “You look - this place is - wow.”

Nyla’s mouth curves. Not quite a smile. Something more controlled than that, something that suggests amusement without committing to it fully. “You look stunning, Emily.”

The way she says her name - slowly, each syllable given its full weight - sends a pulse of heat through Emily’s belly that radiates outward, warming her cheeks, her chest, the insides of her thighs. She can feel herself blushing, and she hates that she blushes, and she can’t stop.

The hostess disappears. Emily takes in the table: the long white tablecloth, heavy linen, pooling on the floor on all sides. The silverware - too much of it, arranged in a geometry she doesn’t understand, forks and knives and spoons of varying sizes. A single candle in a glass cylinder, the flame steady and warm. And between them, a bottle of wine already open, breathing, the dark liquid catching the candlelight.

Nyla reaches for the bottle. Her movements are unhurried, precise - the tilt of the wrist, the steady pour, the way she fills Emily’s glass with a little twist at the end to prevent any drops on the tablecloth. Nyla then fills her own, sets the bottle down, and lifts her glass. The crystal catches the light, throwing fractured amber across the white linen.

“To new things, ” Nyla says.

Emily lifts her glass. The crystal is thin, almost weightless, and when it touches Nyla’s, the sound is clean and bright - a single, pure note that hangs in the air between them. “To new things, ” Emily echoes, and she takes a gulp. The wine is dark and rich, something with depth and tannin and a warmth that spreads through her chest immediately. She swallows, and the taste hits her like a key turning in a lock, loosening something in her shoulders, her jaw, the tight coil of nerves at the base of her spine.

“It’s good, ” she says, and takes another swallow, larger than the first, feeling the warmth spread from her throat to the rest of her body.

Nyla watches her drink with that same measured attention. She takes a sip of her own wine - small, controlled, nothing like Emily’s desperate gulping - and sets the glass down with a quiet precision that makes Emily feel like a bull in a china shop.

“So, Emily, ” Nyla says, and she leans forward slightly, her elbows on the table, her chin resting on her interlaced fingers. “Tell me about you.”

It’s not a question the way most people ask it. Most people ask tell me about yourself the way they ask how’s the weather - a placeholder, a social lubricant, something to fill the space between ordering and eating. Nyla asks it the way a surgeon asks about symptoms: focused, unhurried, every word chosen with the understanding that the answer matters.

Emily opens her mouth, and what comes out surprises her.

She talks about the boyfriends. Not only Marcus specifically, but the pattern of them. The ones who were fine. The ones who took her to the same restaurants, ordered the same dishes, kissed her with the same predictable rhythm, fucked her in the same predictable fashion, fell asleep to the same predictable spots channel. She talks about the job - the marketing firm, the Henderson account, the steady climb through middle management that feels less like ascent and more like treading water. She talks about the apartment, the routines, the Sunday mornings spent scrolling through her phone in bed because there was nothing else to do, nothing else she wanted to do.

She talks about the insufficiency of it. The way fine has become a four-letter word in her vocabulary, a word that means not enough and too much simultaneously - not enough sensation, not enough risk, not enough of the electric aliveness she thought her late 20s were supposed to be about. And too much - too much comfort, too much predictability, too much of a life that felt like it had been assembled from a kit with someone else’s instructions.

She’s saying things she hasn’t said aloud before. Not to Sarah, not to her therapist during the three sessions she attended before deciding she was fine, not to herself in the bathroom mirror at three in the morning. She’s saying them to this woman she met twenty-four hours ago, and the words are pouring out of her like water through a cracked dam, and she can’t stop, and she doesn’t want to stop, because Nyla is listening.

Nyla is listening the way a person listens when they already know the answer and are simply waiting for you to reach it yourself. She doesn’t interrupt. She doesn’t nod sympathetically or make encouraging noises. She sits perfectly still, those dark eyes fixed on Emily’s face, and the attention is so complete, so total, that Emily feels like she’s being mapped. Every micro-expression cataloged, every hesitation noted, every shift in tone filed away for later examination.

When Emily finally runs out of words - when the torrent slows to a trickle and then stops, leaving her breathless and slightly stunned at her own candor - Nyla doesn’t rush to fill the silence. She lets it sit between them, warm and heavy, and then she takes the last sipe in her glass of wine.

As Nyla refills her glass, she asks, “Did you like what we did last night?”

The question lands like a hand on bare skin. Emily laughs - a sharp, startled sound that comes from somewhere deep in her chest. “Yes, ” she says, and the word feels inadequate, a child’s drawing of a cathedral. “Yes, I - God, yes. I thought I was going to suffocate.”

The memory surfaces unbidden: the weight of Nyla’s body, the soft flesh sealing against her nostrils, the darkness creeping in at the edges of her vision while her tongue worked frantically between Nyla’s thighs. The orgasm that had felt less like pleasure and more like annihilation. She can feel her pulse quickening just thinking about it, can feel the heat building between her legs, the fabric of her underwear growing damp against her swollen flesh.

“You seemed to like the danger of it, ” Nyla says quietly. Not a question. An observation delivered with the flat certainty of someone reading a measurement from a calibrated instrument.

Emily opens her mouth to respond - to say something witty, something self-deprecating, something that maintains the fiction that she is in control of this conversation - and then she feels it.

Pressure. Warm, deliberate, exploratory. Between her thighs.

Emily goes rigid - perfectly, absolutely still.

Nyla’s bare foot - she’s slipped it from her sandal any other indication, without a single shift in her composed expression - is pressing against the inside of Emily’s thigh. The arch of her bare foot is warm and firm, the skin smooth against Emily’s bare leg where the burgundy dress has ridden up, and the pressure is moving inward, sliding higher with a slow, unhurried precision that makes Emily’s breath catch in her throat.

The foot finds the apex of Emily’s thighs and presses flat against her through the thin fabric of her underwear, and Emily’s entire body clenches - her stomach, her thighs, the muscles between her legs gripping involuntarily around nothing. She is already wet. She’s been wet since she sat down, since Nyla poured the wine, since those dark eyes found hers across the table. The fabric of her underwear is saturated, clinging to her swollen flesh, and Nyla’s foot presses against it with a pressure that sends a bolt of sensation straight up through her core.

Emily’s eyes go wide. She looks down at the tablecloth - the long, heavy linen pooling on the floor - and then back at Nyla, and the alarm must be visible on her face because Nyla’s mouth curls up at one corner in a mischievous smile that transforms her composed features into something almost playful.

“Don’t worry, ” Nyla says, her voice low and even, carrying no further than the space between them. “The tablecloths are long enough. No one will notice.”

And it’s true. From any angle - the neighboring tables, the staff moving quietly between them, the couple three tables over laughing over their appetizers - there is nothing to see. Just two women having dinner. Just a bottle of wine and a candle and a conversation that looks perfectly ordinary. The tablecloth is a curtain, heavy and white, and behind it Nyla’s foot is pressing against the soaked fabric between Emily’s thighs with the steady, unhurried pressure of someone who has all the time in the world.

Emily’s breath comes shallow and quick. She grips the edge of the table with both hands, her knuckles whitening, and she can feel the leather of the chair warm against her bare thighs where the burgundy wrap has ridden up, can feel the cool air of the restaurant against the damp skin of her inner legs, and Nyla’s foot is right there, the arch of it cupping her through the thin lace of her underwear, and the pressure is maddening - not enough, too much, exactly wrong and exactly right.

“Is this - ” Emily’s voice cracks, and she clears her throat, tries again. “Is this the surprise?”

The laugh that comes out of Nyla is sharp and bright, a bark of genuine amusement that cuts through the ambient murmur of the restaurant. Her upper body doesn’t move - not a millimeter - but the sound is warm and unguarded in a way that makes Emily’s chest ache. “No, silly, ” Nyla says, “This is to get you to agree to the surprise.”

Emily opens her mouth to respond, and then Nyla’s big toe moves.

It slides along the damp lace, finding the edge of the fabric with an accuracy that suggests either extraordinary dexterity or extensive practice, and Emily’s jaw clenches as the toe hooks under the elastic and pushes it aside. The cool air hits her exposed flesh, and she shivers - a full-body tremor that fires up her spine - and then Nyla’s toe is pressing against her, parting her, and the wet heat of her own arousal is suddenly, devastatingly visible to no one and yet felt everywhere by Emily.

The toe pushes inside her.

Emily’s back arches against the chair. The sensation is obscene - the warm, smooth skin of Nyla’s toe sliding into her swollen, aching cunt, stretching her open, the pressure of it filling her in a way that makes her vision blur. She is so wet that there is no resistance, just the slick, yielding warmth of her own body opening around Nyla’s foot, and the toe curls inside her, pressing against the front wall, and Emily makes a sound - a thin, high whimper that she catches behind her teeth before it can escape.

Nyla’s expression doesn’t change. She sits across the table with the same composed, interested calm, her chin resting on her interlaced fingers, her dark eyes fixed on Emily’s face with the focused attention of someone reading a particularly compelling text. The only movement is below the tablecloth - the slow, deliberate flex of her foot, her toe working inside Emily with a rhythm that is unhurried and devastating.

Emily’s thighs are trembling. She can feel the muscles jumping beneath her skin, the involuntary clenching of her body around Nyla’s toe, the way her hips are trying to press forward, seeking more pressure, more depth. The toe withdraws slightly, then pushes deeper, and Emily’s fingers dig into the edge of the table hard enough that she feels the wood bite into her palms through the tablecloth.

“There’s something I want you to try tonight, ” Nyla says. Her voice is conversational, warm, the same tone she used when she asked about Emily’s job and her boyfriends and the insufficiency of fine. As though she is discussing wine pairings rather than working her bare foot between Emily’s legs in a restaurant where the entrees cost more than Emily’s weekly grocery budget.

Emily can’t speak. She can only nod, a jerky, desperate movement, and Nyla’s toe curls inside her again and the pressure against that spot - that devastating, electric spot - makes her vision fracture into prismatic shards.

“It’s a drug, ” Nyla continues, and she takes a small sip of her wine, her throat working as she swallows, and Emily watches the movement of her neck and feels Nyla’s toe slide deeper and her brain is short-circuiting, the input too much, too many sensations competing for bandwidth. “Don’t worry, it isn’t illegal. Just very rare. An old failed painkiller from a defunct pharmaceutical company that went out of business about a decade ago. A few hundred doses still exist in the world, and they’re prohibitively priced.”

Nyla’s toe withdraws, and Emily nearly whines at the loss - the sound catches in her throat, strangled - and then the toe returns, pressing against her clit this time, circling it with a pressure that is firm and precise and absolutely devastating. Emily’s hips buck involuntarily, pushing up into the contact, and the chair creaks beneath her and she freezes, terrified that someone will hear, but the ambient noise of the restaurant swallows the sound and Nyla’s expression doesn’t flicker.

“It’s an aphrodisiac... it makes you want sex, ” Nyla says, and her voice drops half a register, becomes something intimate and conspiratorial, a secret pressed into the warm air between them. “Not just want it. Need it. Your body craves it the way it craves oxygen. Every nerve ending becomes a receptor for sensation, and the sensation it wants most is contact. Skin against skin. Pressure. Friction. The drug rewires your reward pathways so that sexual stimulation becomes the most compelling thing your brain has ever experienced. You want and need to fuck, be fucked.”

Emily’s mouth is open. She can feel it - her lips parted, her breath coming in short, ragged bursts through her teeth. The toe on her clit is maintaining that relentless, circular pressure, and she can feel the orgasm building at the base of her spine like a wave gathering mass before it breaks.

“And that’s not even the interesting part, ” Nyla says. She tilts her head slightly, and the candlelight catches the copper threads in her hair, turning them to molten gold. “The reason it was never allowed onto the market - the real reason, the one the company buried - can you guess what that is, Emily?”

Emily wants to respond, but she can’t trust her voices. All she can manage is to shake her head minutely, as she hangs onto the edge of the table, in extremis.

“It transforms pain into pleasure.”

The toe presses harder. Emily’s thighs are shaking visibly now, the muscles jumping and twitching beneath the burgundy fabric of her dress, and she grips the table edge so hard she can feel the wood splintering against her nails.

“A pinch, ” Nyla says, and her voice is almost hypnotic, the cadence measured and rhythmic, matching the circular motion of her toe, “feels like someone is touching the most sensitive part of your body. A slap becomes a caress. And a fresh piercing - ” She pauses, and the toe slows, and Emily nearly sobs at the reduction in pressure. “A fresh piercing becomes an orgasm that restarts every time you touch the wound. Every time the metal moves against the raw tissue, your body floods with pleasure so intense it’s almost unbearable. And it goes on like that - every touch, every brush of fabric, every shift of weight - triggering another wave, another crest, until the drug wears off.”

Emily’s vision is tunneling. The edges are going dark, the way they did last night when Nyla’s weight crushed her face, and the darkness is warm this time, inviting, pulling her toward something enormous.

“The more pain, ” Nyla continues, and her toe resumes its rhythm, faster now, the pressure increasing with each revolution, “the larger the pleasure that replaces it. The sensations are - well, Emily, they’re beyond anything you’ve ever experienced. The orgasms are enormous. They go on for minutes. Sometimes an hour. Your body convulses and releases and convulses again, and the pleasure doesn’t diminish - it builds, layer upon layer, until you’re not sure where your body ends and the sensation begins.”

Emily’s stomach is clenched so tight it hurts. Her toes are curled inside her burgundy heels, her calves rigid, her thighs pressed together around Nyla’s foot in a desperate, involuntary grip. The pressure on her clit is relentless, the toe circling with a precision that suggests Nyla can feel exactly what she’s doing, can read Emily’s responses through the skin of her foot the way a pianist reads sheet music.

“It makes sex beyond amazing, ” Nyla says, and her voice has dropped to something barely above a whisper, the words falling into the space between them like stones into still water. “Though, perhaps at the same time, it ruins sex for you. Because nothing can ever compare to this. Nothing you’ve felt before, nothing you’ll feel after, will ever reach the same height. It recalibrates your entire understanding of pleasure.”

Emily is climbing. She can feel it - the wave gathering, the pressure building at the base of her spine, the tightening in her belly, the way her breath has become shallow and rapid, each inhalation a thin, desperate sip of air. Nyla’s toe is moving faster now, the circles tightening, the pressure increasing with each revolution, and Emily’s hips are moving of their own accord, grinding down against the foot, seeking more contact, more friction, more of that devastating pressure.

“Would you like to try it?” Nyla asks.

The question hangs in the air between them. Emily can smell the wine - rich and dark, the tannins sharp in her nostrils - and the candle wax, something beeswax and honey, and beneath it Nyla’s scent, sandalwood and something warmer, something that makes Emily’s mouth water. She can hear the distant piano, the murmur of conversation, the clink of glass, all of it just cover for the wet, obscene gyration of Nyla’s foot moving between her thighs, the slick friction of skin against swollen flesh.

Emily is trying not to make a sound. She is biting her lower lip so hard she tastes copper, the split from last night reopening under the pressure of her teeth, and her hands are gripping the edge of the table with a white-knuckled desperation that has turned her knuckles bloodless. The orgasm is right there - she can feel it hovering at the threshold, massive and inevitable, and Nyla’s toe is pressing and circling and pressing, and the words are still hanging in the air, and Emily’s entire body is a single, trembling note about to break.

She comes.

It hits her like a wall: a massive, rolling wave of pleasure that starts in her cunt and radiates outward through every nerve ending in her body. Her back arches, her mouth falls open, and the sound that escapes is a thin, strangled gasp that she catches behind her teeth at the last possible second. The orgasm rolls through her in long, shuddering waves, her body clenching and releasing around nothing, her thighs locked around Nyla’s foot, her hips bucking in small, involuntary jerks that she can’t control. The pleasure is blinding - white-hot and all-consuming - and it goes on and on, each wave cresting higher than the last as Nyla’s toe continues its assault on Emily’s clit, and she is gripping the table and biting her lip and shaking apart in a quiet, expensive restaurant while a woman she met yesterday works her foot between her legs.

When it finally recedes - when the last tremor subsides and Emily’s body goes limp against the leather chair, her chest heaving, her vision swimming - she hears herself speak. The word comes from somewhere deep and animal, somewhere past thought, past reason, past the careful architecture of self-preservation she’s spent twenty-nine years building.

“Yes.”
